    Millsaps College, founded in 1890, is a private, coeducational institution affiliated with the Methodist Church. The 100-acre campus is located in an urban area. Total undergraduate and graduate enrollment is 1154. Enrollment and room and board figures in the capsule are approximate.

    The Else School of Management was founded in 1979 and is located on the main campus, in its own building, Murrah Hall. The basic educational approach is one that employs case studies along with traditional lectures, seminars, small group projects, independent study, visiting executive speakers, and interdisciplinary courses.

    Millsaps College, Else School of Management Academics

    The Else School offers the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Accountancy (MAcc). Other programs include a cooperative program with Centenary College, work-study, internships, and joint research. The strongest areas of study are finance, marketing, accounting, and management. The most popular courses are Business Policy, Organizational Behavior, Marketing Strategy, and Financial Management. Regular programs bring distinguished speakers and visiting professors to campus from local, regional, and national organizations.

    Thirty total credits are required to complete the MBA, including 12 elective credits. Required courses include:

    • Analytical and Economic Concepts
    • Organizational Behavior and Leadership * Accounting and Financial Strategy for Managers
    • Strategic Marketing and Management Information Systems
    • Strategic Management
    • Communications
    • Renaissance Readings (Leadership and Ethics)

    Students may eliminate or substitute requirements through waiver exams. Prior course work may be accepted.

    Business students may take relevant nonbusiness courses in other departments. The minimum time permitted to complete the master’s degree program attending full time is 1 year; maximum, 6 years. For students attending part time, the minimum is 1 <2/3> years; maximum, 6 years.

    There are 16 total full-time graduate business faculty, all of whom hold a doctorate; there are 4 part-time faculty, 3 of whom hold a doctorate. Faculty salaries are rated average for Category IIB institutions, based on the AAUP rating system. Average number of courses faculty teach is 4; average business class size is 15.

    Library

    The Millsaps-Wilson Library houses a collection of more than 264,000 volumes, 54,200 microform items, and 6600 audio/video tapes/CDs, and subscribes to 895 periodicals. The business library is particularly strong in finance. Students have access to such databases and networks as Disclosure. Other opportunities for research consist of the Small Business Development Center and Foreign Trade Institute, the Watkins Ludlam Center for Professional Services, and the Walker Center for Entrepreneurial Study, which work with constituency groups throughout the city and state.

    Computers

    Graduate business students need not have their own PCs. The business school has its own computer facilities, consisting of 4 PCs and 8 terminals in the school’s building, networked to a DEC VAX mainframe. On campus are 25 PC classrooms, as well as 50 PCs in laboratories available 24 hours a day. Software includes dBASE, Lotus, Quattro Pro, Minitab, WordPerfect, and SAS.

    Career and Job Placement

    In spring of a recent year, 23 companies recruited on campus. Seventy percent were national corporations. Majors most in demand were accounting, business administration, marketing, finance, and consulting. Placement services are limited, since most students are already employed full time. Placement services for alumni include resumes on file and references. Placement is available through the college placement office and the school’s referral service.

    International Students

    International students must take the TOEFL. International students must score 550 on the Paper-Based TOEFL (PBT). They also must submit a translation of their transcripts and proof of adequate funds to cover 1 year of study. Financial aid is available for these students and after 1 semester of study.

    Calendar

    The school operates on a traditional semester basis. Semesters are 15 weeks long; summer sessions, 5 weeks. Graduate programs are offered during the day and evening.

    A bachelor’s degree is required, along with a GPA of 3.0 and a GMAT score of 500. Most important admissions factors are academic accomplishments and ability, GMAT results, and work experience. A strong mathematics background is not required.

    Transfers are accepted. Minority students are actively recruited by aggressive financial aid awards offered to qualified candidates.

    Students may begin the MBA program in the fall, spring, and summer. To apply, students must submit an application form, a transcript, GMAT scores, an application fee of $25, 2 letters of recommendation, and 3 essays. The application deadline is open for fall entry. Students are notified of the admissions decision within 30 days after their application file is complete. Once accepted, students may defer admission for up to 1 calendar year from admission date.

    Millsaps College, Else School of Management Financial Aid

    In a recent year, about 80% of graduate business school students received financial aid from scholarships, loans, and graduate assistantships. Stipends and programs available for minority students include Coca-Cola Minority Scholarships. The FAFSA the school’s own financial statement, and the previous year’s tax return are required. Check with the school for current application deadlines.

    Tuition for all students is $770 per credit, or $23,520 per year. On-campus room and board costs approximately $6000. Check with the school for current housing costs. Graduate student housing consists of coed apartment-style housing on campus as well as off-campus apartments. There is a referral service to help procure off-campus housing.

    Thirty-seven percent of a recent graduate business school class were enrolled full time; 80% have had an average of 6 years of full-time work experience prior to entering graduate school, a factor preferred by the school. The greatest percentage of students are from Mississippi (70%). Fifty percent are women, 20% are minorities, and 5% are foreign nationals. The average age at entrance is 28; ages range from 22 to 52. Twenty percent enter directly from undergraduate school; 7% already have a graduate degree. Students’ undergraduate majors were as follows: 40%, business; 25%, engineering; 15%, social sciences; 10%, math and science; 5%, economics; and 5%, liberal arts. About 5% of entering students leave by the end of the first year due to academic or personal reasons; 90% remain to receive their degree.
