Located in the University Circle district of Cleveland, Ohio, United States, the Cleveland Institute of Music is one of the nation’s premier music conservatories. On Feb. 14, 2007, an article broke in the Cleveland Scene newspaper describing how the music school misshandled a sexual harrassment case brought on by a former student of Cleveland Orchestra Concertmaster William Preucil, a faculty member at the school. The condition was that she was to keep her silence regarding this matter and CIM would pay for the student to audition at other music schools, and once admitted to a school, pay for the student’s tuition for the remainder of her studies. When the Cleveland Scene newspaper was writing this story, a reporter from the newspaper left a message on the voicemail of William Preucil, inquiring about the case, Mr. Preucil responded later to the newspaper via e-mail writing: “With respect to your question regarding my work at CIM, I can only presume that the rumors you hear are based on an incident that occurred a few years ago when there was a dispute over the nature of an interaction I had with a student.
