East Valley Institute of Technology

Academics

East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) is a small public career and technical school that offers less than one-year and less than two-year certificates in a variety of fields. The distribution of certificates awarded is almost evenly split between the one-year and two-year programs. Located in the large city of Mesa, Arizona, the institute is especially known for its programs in production trades but has a range of other program offerings that is impressively wide, considering its size.

Areas of study include nursing and emergency medicine, beauty and cosmetology, media, mechanics and repair, cooking and culinary arts, therapy and counseling, photography and commercial art, production trades, engineering technician, family and social work, security and law enforcement, business and management, office and administration, design, and education and teaching.

Within these paths of study, there are 35 occupation-specific programs in which students can earn elective credit. The long list of specific majors that students can choose from include nursing assistant, licensed practical nurse, cosmetology, aesthetician, skin care, animation and special effects, radio and TV tech, communications tech courses, auto body repair, automobile mechanics, HVAC, computer repair, chef training, massage therapy, commercial art, commercial photography, machinist, welding, property management, construction trades, drafting, electronics tech, child care management, criminal justice and police, fire protection, MIS, administrative assistant, interior design, and instructional media design.

With a focus on hands-on, practical training, the educational mission of EVIT is “to provide a productive, technically trained workforce that meets the market-driven needs of business and industry.”

Student Enrollment Demographics

Local Community

Since EVIT offers neither on-campus housing nor meal plan options, all students must find their own room and board off campus in the surrounding area of Mesa, Arizona.

With a population of nearly half-a-million people, Mesa, a suburb of Phoenix, is the third-largest city in Arizona and largest suburb in the United States. The area is growing rapidly and boasts a prospering industrial area. The strong economy and year-round warm weather make Mesa a popular place among important companies, such as Boeing and AT&T (two of the city’s leading employers), and young professionals.

In addition to its many employment opportunities, Mesa has a lot to offer EVIT students in the way of culture, sports and leisure, outdoors, and nightlife.

In terms of culture, downtown Mesa is home to the Arts and Cultural District, which consists of the Mesa Arts Center, the Mesa Southwest Shakespeare Company, the Mesa Southwest Museum, and other galleries, dance companies, and theaters.

Baseball fans can follow the minor league Mesa Angels, affiliate of the Anaheim Angels, or travel the 18 miles to nearby Phoenix to attend an Arizona Diamondbacks game. Phoenix is also home to the NFL’s Cardinals, the NBA’s Suns, the WNBA’s Mercury, and the NHL’s Coyotes.
