The Laurel Business Institute began in 1985 with the goal of training students to gain the skills they would need in the business world. The institute was and is very focused on the community while offering a personalized experience.

Laurel Business Institute offers diplomas in two programs, associate degrees in six programs, and certifications in a variety of programs. The available programs are Accounting & Business, Early Childhood Education, Cosmetology, Health Care, Information Technology, Massage, and Office Administration. The program options allow you to focus on what you would really like to accomplish in your career.

Laurel Business Institute was the first postsecondary educational institute to have an authorized Prometric Testing Center and Microsoft Office Testing Center. So, if you want to take a certification test, Laurel Business Institute is the place to go in the area. You can use the testing centers whether you are an enrolled student or not.

Admissions

In order to qualify for acceptance to Laurel Business Institute you must have a high school diploma or have earned your General Education Development (GED) degree and have passed the Wonderlic Scholastic Level exam. This is an exam that is given on campus.

Before filling out an application, Laurel Business Institute requires that you visit the school to meet with an admissions representative and a financial aid representative, and complete an admission assessment. The next step is to fill out the admissions application and submit it along with your transcripts and an application fee. You will hear from the school within two weeks of submitting your application. The three semesters begin in February, June, and September. While there is no official deadline, there are limited openings, so the earlier you apply the better.

Financial Aid

Being able to afford an education is very important to Laurel Business Institute, which is why they play such a large role in helping you receive financial aid. When you meet with one of the school’s Financial Aid Representatives you will learn of all the grants, loan, scholarships, and programs that are available to assist you in paying for your education at Laurel Business Institute. The representatives will help you throughout the entire process, from start to finish.

The grants that are available are the Pell Grant, PHEAA and OIG state grants, and Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants. Possible loans are the Federal Stafford Loan, and the Federal Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students. Veteran’s benefits are also available for veterans and their dependents that qualify.

Laurel Business Institute also offers a variety of scholarships to qualified students. For students who are graduating high school there are two possible scholarships, the Milton T. Decker Memorial Scholarship and the John D. Mihm Memorial Scholarship. The Milton T. Decker Scholarship is a full tuition award available for high school students in their senior year with a 3.5 GPA or higher. The John D. Mihm Scholarship is a half tuition award available for high school students in their senior year with a 3.0 GPA or higher.

If you are not graduating high school, there are still opportunities for you. The Christopher D. Decker Memorial Scholarship, a half tuition award, is available for potential students who are not currently seniors in high school. For example, you may have your GED, are transferring into Laurel Business Institute, or want to come back to school after a long period away. The Ruth H. and Milton T. Decker Memorial Scholarship is for current students at Laurel Business Institute. You must have completed two or more semesters in one of their associate degree programs with a GPA of 3.25.

If the school does not offer a scholarship that is a good fit for you, your Financial Aid Representative will know of other possibilities available in the community and through other organizations, which is why a meeting with them is so important.

Students

Although the Laurel Business Institute’s campus is not a traditional one and all students commute, they offer a lot for students as far as organization and events. Cookouts, charity events, and holiday parties are just a few of the events that students can participate in throughout the year. The two possible organizations to join are Phi Beta Lambda and Health Occupations Students of America.

The chapter of Phi Beta Lambda at Laurel Business Institute began in 2001. It has continued to grow since its start, participating in several competitions and winning many awards, including 14 National Awards of Excellence in seven years. Any current student can join Phi Beta Lambda, but to participate in events they must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and have attended at least 90% of the meetings. Phi Beta Lambda is meant to be similar to the Future Business Leaders of America. Both are professional organizations tailored specifically for students who are studying business. The organization combines education and business, giving students experience and insight into a future career in business.

The Health Occupations Students of America chapter at Laurel Business Institute began in 2008 and has grown to over 45 members. It brings together education and health for students pursuing a career in health care. It is endorsed by the US Department of Education and raises awareness, skills, and knowledge of students interested in a health science education. The organization participates in several charity events throughout the year.
