Academics

At the Lebanon County Career Technology Center, or the Lebanon County Area Vocational Technical School, located in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, high school and adult students are provided with the training they need to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their chosen career paths. The goal at Lebanon is to help students find or excel in their career paths, to enjoy the personal and academic benefits of secondary education, and improve their overall lives. Since 1964 this public, certificate granting institution of higher learning, has provided such training to the local community, at the beginning with just 18 courses offered to students from six sending high school districts. After enjoying much increase in enrollment, Lebanon has expanded and has improved its programs and facilities to keep up with the demand for vocational and technical training.

The current Lebanon County Area Vocational Technical School is housed in a state-of-the-art facility equipped for real-world technical training. Students may elect to study in any one of 27 available programs, and enjoy the benefits of college articulation agreements and Cooperative Education. Evening continuing adult education is available and courses run in semesters. Daytime adult education runs for the full day and available programs include auto body technology, automotive technology, diesel truck technology, electrical technology, carpentry residential constructions, industrial machine technology, cosmetology, pastry arts, culinary arts and plumbing heating & air conditioning. Students may also elect to study in the licensed practical nursing program, which prepares them to take the NCLEX-PN Examination to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, or in “Tech Prep” or “School-to-Careers” which are linked to two-year college degree programs. Such programs are linked to institutions like the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, the Automotive Training Center, the Harrisburg Area Community College, ITT Technical Institute, Johnson & Wales, Northampton Community College, the PA College of Art and Design, the PA College of Technology, the PA Culinary Institute, the Restaurant School- Walnut Hill, the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, and the University of Northwestern Ohio.

Instructors at Lebanon are highly trained, and are required to attain standards, certifications and credentials at the state, national, and major trade association levels. Some examples of Lebanon instructors’ certifying agencies include the American Culinary Federation, the American Welding Society, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation, the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation, the Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Program, and the Pennsylvania Builder’s Association, amongst many others. The Lebanon County Career and Technology Center is accredited by the State Board of Vocational Education.

Admissions

Students applying to the practical nursing department must meet special admissions requirements, and must request an application directly from the department. Potential students must be Pennsylvania residents, hold a high school diploma or equivalent (GED), pass a pre-admission exam, and submit all required forms including references, transcripts, pre-admission physical and dental exams, CPR certification evidence, a PA State Police criminal record check, a child abuse history clearance, and an FBI fingerprint. Students will also be required to undergo a personal interview, and a financial aid information session upon successful submission or completion of all required items.

Any high school student interested in applying for admission at Lebanon should contact the guidance counselor at their home school, and download a copy of the new student application on Lebanon’s website.

Adult students that would like to enroll at Lebanon must complete a registration form and submit it for processing. In order to qualify for admission to vocational education, all applicants must be over 18 years of age. There will be no required pre-admissions tests. To begin the process it is recommended that prospective students meet with the adult education staff. All adult students will be required to submit a request for criminal record check and child abuse history clearance. Further career guidance or aptitude testing may be required to properly assess the adult student’s potential and place within Lebanon’s academic framework. Fees are to be determined upon successful determination of the individual student’s programming and coursework.

Financial Aid

Some students may qualify for Federal financial aid assistance. Students wishing to receive financial aid must fill out the FAFSA online, and may qualify for grants or loans. Eligibility to qualify for a Pell Grant based on the Expected Family Contribution list on your Student Aid Report will be determined by the Hunter’s Financial Aid Consultants.

Tuition fees and supply costs for Adult Education programs are subject to the specifications of each course, and students should seethe listing after each course description for specific information. Tuition covers ordinary operating costs, books, special materials and consumable supplies, unless otherwise stated.

Students who are not residents of Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, should expect to pay a small additional fee. Senior citizens are given a percentage discount on the cost of tuition.

Practical Nursing Program students may be additionally approved for PELL Grants, Stafford Loans, VA Benefits, and may qualify for scholarship opportunities. Early application is recommended for greatest scholarship consideration. As the program is funded greatly by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, tuition rates are subject to state reimbursement rates.

Students

While Lebanon is classified as a small school with under 2,000 enrolled students, it is set in a mid- to large- urban setting in the state of Pennsylvania. There is no provided campus housing, and prospective students should budget in room and board, and transportation costs for the duration of their course of study. All of the currently enrolled students are in-state residents, and all study on a full-time basis.

Once known as Steitztown, Lebanon, Pennsylvania is a city of approximately 25,000 inhabitants located just 26 miles east of Harrisburg, and 29 miles west of Reading. In addition to the Lebanon County Area Vocational Technical School, Lebanon is home to the Harrisburg Area Community College’s Lebanon campus. Lebanon is home to a unique New Year’s Eve tradition where a Lebanon bologna is suspended from a fire department ladder truck, and later donated to a local rescue mission. Notable former residents include composer Thomas Albert, former NFL quarterback Dick Shiner, and NASCAR driver bobby Gerhart.
