Baldwin-Wallace College, located in Berea, Ohio offers students solid academic programs at a beautiful, historic campus. The private Ohio college offers students a strong, traditional, liberal arts emphasis.

Baldwin-Wallace is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and has been in existence for more than 150 years. The college is perhaps best known for its internationally renowned music education program. The school was one of the first educational institutions in America to enroll students regardless of their gender or race, and that tradition of equality remains important at the school today. The school also has a strong tradition of community service, and many Baldwin-Wallace students participate in local and international service projects.

For students seeking a solid academic background, Baldwin-Wallace offers a traditional liberal arts education along with courses intended to prepare students for successful careers.

Baldwin-Wallace College offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees as well as certificate programs. The school offers more than 50 majors, along with a number of pre-professional and cooperative programs. Baldwin-Wallace College’s graduate programs include master’s degrees in several business and education majors.

Baldwin-Wallace College Distinctions and Honors

The college’s Conservatory of Music is internationally respected and has strong ties to Broadway. Baldwin-Wallace music students and alumni regularly win prestigious music awards, such as the 2011 International Barlow Prize. The college’s Riemenschneider Bach Institute is one of just a handful of universities and colleges in the Western Hemisphere to have original compositions written in famed composer Johannes Sebastian Bach’s own hand.

The college added a neuroscience bachelor’s degree in the late 90s and the program has become well-regarded. Nearly 95 percent of the college’s neuroscience majors go on to be accepted into graduate or medical school.

The college also has an excellent education program, with Baldwin-Wallace graduates scoring above state averages on teacher certification examinations.

The college has a student to faculty ratio of 15-to-one, and more than 80 percent of first-year students return for a second year, an important indicator of student satisfaction and the institution’s support for its incoming freshmen.

U.S. News and World Report ranked Baldwin-Wallace College as one of the 15 best regional schools in the Midwest. The publication also gave the college high marks for providing quality for students tuition dollars, ranking it among the best value schools in the Midwest.

Backstage, a theatre publication, ranks the school’s musical theatre program as one of the top 10 in the nation.

Accreditation

The college is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, which accredits schools in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. The association also accredits schools for the Navajo Nation.

Baldwin-Wallace College Admissions

Baldwin-Wallace College has an selective admissions policy, and about 64 percent of all applicants to the college are accepted. Students applying to the college are required to submit high school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, documentation of civic or community involvement, character references, class rank, extracurriculars and an essay.

The college typically accepts students with a high school GPA of 3.2 or higher, an ACT score of 23 or higher or SAT scores of 550 verbal, 550 math. The college also seeks students who are in the top 30 percent of their graduating class. Requirements may be waved for outstanding students or in special cases by college administrators.

The school has a rolling admissions deadline, but students applying for financial aid should turn in their documentation by May 1. Students should complete the FAFSA and turn in high school transcripts as well as test score and other relevant information.

As of Sept. 2011, the college has a $25 application fee.

The school provides a broad range of opportunities for students to become involved in campus life, and hosts many events for students each year. The college is located close to Cleveland, OH, offering students plenty of entertainment, cultural and internship and career opportunities.

Athletics

Baldwin-Wallace College is a member of the NCCA Division III and participates in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The college offers men’s basketball, baseball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, wrestling and swimming; and women’s basketball, softball, cross country, volleyball, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field, and swimming. Baldwin-Wallace College also offers a number of intramural sports for students.

The college’s football team won a NCAA Division III championship in 1978. In 2011, track and field star Kim Chinn won the NCAA Division III steeplechase. The school’s athletic teams are also regular competitors and winners in Ohio Athletic Conference championships.

Baldwin-Wallace teams are known as the Yellow Jackets. School colors are brown and gold.

Baldwin-Wallace College Traditions

The college has an annual Bach Festival, celebrating the famed composer; an April Reign week involving contests and events before finals; and a yearly May Day. May Day typically attracts big-name performers, including Maroon 5, Toby Keith and New Found Glory.
