For more than one hundred years, West Tennessee Business College is an institution that is known for offering only top notch education to its students who seek relevant career training. Their programs are specifically designed in order to provide students with the expertise that is definitely necessary to meet the high demands of today’s fast-paced and cutthroat labor market. The need for well qualified workers for districts of West Tennessee and Jackson was realized in 1888 and the Jackson School of Business was established in order to fulfil this need. This institution specialized in offering its students just business courses; The 3 R’s, reading, rithmetic and riting; in addition to this, the school also offered bookkeeping and spelling.

Another business institution was established in Jackson in 1923 and was named The West Tennessee Business College. The school was situated in Montgomery Ward’s former building at the east turning of College & Liberty streets. The college was moved to the Elks Building’s 3rd floor located on Baltimore Street in 1928. The West Tennessee Business College as it is known today was established when the Jackson School of Business and the West Tennessee Business College both merged in 1929.

The reason why WTBC’s name was retained was due to the fact that a lot of the students attending the college were residents of the neighbouring towns outside Madison and Jackson County. In 1958, WTBC was relocated again when a property was bought on East Main Street. West Tennessee Business College was bought by New World Corp, Anniston, Alabama in 1977 and in 1981 WTBC moved to its current site on the Highway 45 Bypass.

West Tennessee Business College’s curriculum is specially designed in order to meet the requirements of new and growing industries and businesses in West Tennessee. The College’s curriculum also include Diploma courses in Administrative assistant, Medical Assisting, Professioanl Medical Coding, Manicure, Cosmetology, Esthetician and Medical Office Specialist.

West Tennessee Business College’s Associate of Applied Science degrees can be earned in Administrative Assistance and Medical Administrative Assistant.

Admissions

Students applying to West Tennessee Business College must do the following:

  • Be interviewed by WTBC’s admissions representative
  • Sit for a placement test and should meet at least Career Programs Assessment Test (CAPt) composite score of 140. Please Note: Students applying to enroll for WTBC’s Medical Assisting Program should have a scaled score of 50 (or even higher) on the mathematics part of the CAPt. In case an applicant fails to meet the minimum CAPt prerequisite, he or she may retake the test after a period of 30 days and should present a documentation of tutorial work done. If an applicant who is enrolling for WTBC’s Medical Assisting program succeeds in meeting the CAPt’s minimum composite score of 140 but fails to make the scaled score of 50 on the mathematics part of the test, he or she may retake the test after 30 days and should present a documentation of the mathematics tutorial work done. Please Note: The retesting must be done before the student commence classes.
  • Applicants must be over the age of essential high school attendance and should also present proof of their high school graduation or present their General Education Diploma (GED).
  • Important Note: Applicants with a special education diploma, GED correspondence diploma and Certificates of Attendance will not be accepted for admission into West Tennessee Business College. Only state approved accredited correspondence high school diplomas will be accepted upon approval by the institution’s Academic Dean.

    Financial Aid

    Students who want to apply for financial aid are required to do so through West Tennessee Business College’s Financial Aid Office. The institution’s Financial Aid advisors will provide applicants with comprehensive information and the necessary financial application forms as well. West Tennessee Business College chooses to verify 100 percent of all paperwork of Title IV financial aid beneficiaries. Due to WTBC’s policy, all the necessary documentation and forms should be submitted to the institution’s Financial Aid Office before financial assistance will be awarded. If financial aid is the only funds that will be used to pay for tuition and other charges, all financial aid awards MUST be settled before the student start classes. Applicants should note that tuition and other fees are their responsibility. Financial aid should be considered as a means to assist with learning costs.

    Additional School Information

    West Tennessee Business College does not have student housing facilities, so students will need to search for accommodation close to campus.

    The College provides access for disabled students. Wheelchair ramps can be found at the building’s North & South ends. Handicap bathrooms have also been made available and are located at the building’s South end. The building’s North end is where the handicap parking is located and West Tennessee Business College also has hallways with extended width.

    Students may eat their meals in the institution’s Student Center or in the picnic areas located outside the building. Students are not allowed to order for meals from food establishments because hot and cold meals can be bought at the Student Center.
